Citizen Science in 5th Class KPS

Ms. Leacy's 5th Class took part in the 7th GLOBE Air Quality Citizen Science project.
Citizen Science in 5th Class KPS

This is a project designed to raise awareness about air pollution and show how valuable our contribution as citizens can be in contributing to the data.

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is a traffic related pollutant.

KPS was one of 165 schools who participated nationwide this year (up 62 on last year).

We focussed on the measurement of NO2 outdoors at three locations on the school grounds.

Nitrogen dioxide can affect our lungs and can be problematic for people with conditions such as asthma.

When we compared the data from all 165 schools we realised how lucky we are to live in Kilcoole where our results were in the low to medium ranges. Room for improvement nationwide though, particularly in larger towns and cities.
